In a world where capitalism relentlessly expands and consumer culture increasingly dominates, public cultural life is becoming homogenised, with the rich tapestry of diverse life experiences being overshadowed by uniform popular trends. Against this backdrop, we seek to delve deep into the lived realities of various communities, especially those on the fringes, whose voices often go unheard. Through this exploration, we aim to resist the flattening of contemporary sensibilities and the erosion of imagination.
The worker-artist collective Poetry Songs Store from Picun, Beijing, opens a window into the lives of workers through their evocative poetry and visual storytelling. Drawing on their own experiences, members Xiaohai and Ali create a series of poems and music videos that vividly portray the daily rhythms of assembly line workers. Their works reveal not only the struggles and emotional landscapes of these workers but also reflect on the marginalised position and profound reflections of the working class within the capitalist system.
This exhibition, centred around the works of the Poetry Shop, adopts the concept of visualising poetry as its core idea and invites 17 emerging Chinese artists to participate. Through diverse media, these artists delve into the deeper meanings embedded in poetry, giving shape to the cries, silences, struggles, and yearnings within the verses. They create dialogues that resonate with their own experiences and those of wider social groups. By reinterpreting poetry, they weave the lived experiences of workers into a broader narrative, forging new spiritual connections that allow these experiences to be expanded, disseminated, and engaged with more widely.
Furthermore, this exhibition serves as an exploration of the experimental intersections between the languages of art and poetry. The participating artists deconstruct and reimagine narrative and textual elements, employing inventive and imaginative methods to merge visual and linguistic media. In doing so, they breathe new life into the original poetic works, creating a unique artistic context that invites viewers to embark on a journey of novel aesthetic experiences.

Why we are holding this exhibition
In a world where society and technology are rapidly advancing, there are hidden corners filled with stories and experiences that represent different groups, especially those marginalized by mainstream narratives. This exhibition is dedicated to bringing these overlooked voices back into the spotlight through the power of art.
Why We Chose This Group
China has undergone rapid development over the past 40 years, and the working class has played a crucial role in this process. They are the core force driving advanced productivity, yet their true faces are rarely seen in mainstream media and societal values. The lives and work of workers are often reduced to a narrative of numbness and mechanization, as if their emotions and creativity have been neglected or erased. However, we believe that the expression of emotions and the sensitivity to perceive life are fundamental rights for every group, regardless of their social status.
We chose the working class as the focus of this exhibition because they represent a vast yet marginalized community. Their experiences not only deserve to be seen but also need to be understood and discussed. By showcasing their works, we hope to raise public awareness of this group and explore their roles and significance in modern society.
Why We Chose the Poetry Songs Store and Picun
The Poetry Songs Store was founded in Picun, a village in Beijing that is a microcosm of the urban villages formed by migrant workers in China’s major cities. Picun is more than just a geographical location; it is a spiritual home for the working class. Xiaohai and Ali, two worker-artists from Picun, use poetry and video works to reveal the inner world of the working class, providing us with a unique perspective to understand their lives and struggles.
Picun, as a special cultural space, has nurtured cultural organizations such as the Picun Literature Group. Here, people express their thoughts and emotions through literature and art, creating a distinctive cultural atmosphere. We chose the Poetic Shop and Picun not only because of the profound social significance of their works but also because they represent a deep reflection on the lives of workers. These works transcend individual experiences and touch upon broader societal issues, prompting us to re-examine the role and contributions of the working class in modern society.
Through this exhibition, we hope to bring the audience a new visual and emotional experience, encouraging them to think about and discuss the role and significance of the working class in today’s world.
